- ProsSatisfying clicky keys. Very good configuration software. Magnetic wrist rest. Detachable, braided USB cable.
- ConsKey clicks (while nice) are too loud during gaming. High price.
- Bottom LineRazer's tenkeyless gaming keyboard is comfortable to type on and has great software. However, its feature set is lacking to compensate for its steep price tag.
There's no tool more valuable to a PC gamer than his or her keyboard. Keyboards designed for gaming often have a slick appearance, mechanical key switches, and extra features to help gamers, well, game. And while gaming keyboards span the price spectrum, they tend to concentrate in two groups: budget-friendly models that rely on off-brand switches and driver features or high-end units that emphasize bling, build quality, and more programmability than you can throw a two-liter Mountain Dew at. With the BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma V2, Razer clearly aims toward the high end of the market, but is this compact keyboard's feature set enough to justify a $139.99 MSRP?

Design
Razer's latest entry in the BlackWidow lineup keeps to a rather simple design this time around. With or without the use of its flippable feet, the keyboard slopes at an ergonomic, downward angle and finishes with a short, sharp slant at the unit's front edge, which is adorned by the Razer logo. This front edge also integrates magnets, allowing it to connect to the magnetic wrist rest that comes with the keyboard.
The wrist rest, covered in soft faux leather and stuffed with foam, also bears the Razer logo. Several of us in the office use gel wrist rests, and opinions were evenly split on whether the Razer rest was more or less comfortable than gel. Either way, it's close. However, these authors were also split on the physical positioning of the wrist rest. William is a hunt-and-peck typist who tends to keep his elbows wide when working; Garrett is a touch typist who keeps his elbows closer to his ribs. Garrett found the wrist rest perfectly comfortable, while William's left wrist fell partially off the edge of the rest when it's snapped into its usual place. As a result, William tried shifting the rest to the left for better comfort, but without its magnetic mooring, the smooth-bottomed wrist rest slid around. #firstworldproblems
The Tournament Edition is matte-black and free from any of the odd juttings and extras that adorn so many gaming keyboards. The backlight illuminates both the letters of the keys as well as the space around them in the color of your choice. Unfortunately, Razer's keycaps feature painted rather than etched symbols such as @, &, and media commands, so the backlighting fails to make them visible in dim or dark settings. Unless you're a very fluent typist, this can make finding the right key at night rather difficult.
In order to enable its small footprint, this BlackWidow is tenkeyless, meaning it lacks a set of number keys to the right of the cursor arrows. However, Razer also does away with features such as dedicated macro keys and audio pass-through in this edition. Essentially, you're getting the Chroma 16.8-million-color backlighting and Razer's house-brand switches (which were green in our review unit). The micro-USB cable is braided to enhance durability and detachable to enhance portability. The keycaps are slightly concave, and the five main typing rows offer a slight dip in the middle for ergonomic comfort.

This keyboard is available in three Razer switch variants: green (tactile and clicky), orange (tactile and silent), and yellow (linear and silent). Our unit's Razer Green switches tend to headline Razer's switch marketing, and they certainly are pleasant to type on. In fact, they feel nearly identical to Cherry MX Blues, right down to the 50g actuation force. Just like Blues, Razer Greens are satisfyingly clicky, but we found them to be too loud during gaming. Imagine playing an FPS, and you're trying to talk to your teammates to figure out the best plan of attack. As your squad begins to enact your plans, you can barely hear them call out the enemy sniper's location over their incessantly loud clicking. Can this be minimized with a very directional headset mic? Sure. And are the Razer Greens massively louder than MX Blues? No. It's just an incremental thing that we found irksome after so long with MX Blues.

Like most Razer keyboards, the Tournament Edition is a gaming keyboard, and we mean that in the true sense, not the SEO-keyword way that we've mocked in some past reviews. However, most of the BlackWidow's gaming features can only be unlocked via Razer Synapse, a configuration program compatible with all of Razer's keyboards. Let's stop for a second to fully appreciate how awesome it is to only have to download the configuration software once and have it work with any other Razer keyboards you have or might buy. The software delivers some of the features you would expect: macros, backlight customization, and multiple profiles for each setting.

But oh, those backlight settings. On the surface, options look pretty standard. There are a few preset patterns, and you can set specific keys to be lit. However, lying just a few clicks away is the mind-blowing Chroma app compatibility. Specific apps and games are compatible with the Chroma program, which takes over your current backlight settings to deliver specific lighting based on that program. For example, in Overwatch, WASD will be lit in the same orange hue found in the Overwatch logo, and your currently set ability keys (we used the default E and Shift keys) will be lit light blue. Upon using an ability, its dedicated key will start to flash a dim red until the ability can be used again.

Yes, other keyboard software will allow you to set what are essentially backlight macros, but the cool part about Chroma is you don't have to configure these settings yourself. Developers have done the heavy lifting with Razer's Chroma SDK already. You only need to hop into a game and let the program load the settings automatically—no 30-minute setup required. Sadly, the number of supported games and apps is limited, but you can find a list on the Chroma workshop site.
Razer Color Profiles
Speaking of macros, if you create a profile with macros, check the 'link program' box, and select the desired game, you'll automatically switch to that profile whenever that game is launched. We use the term 'game,' but this feature can be used with any program that ends in '.exe'.
Conclusion
Does the Tournament Edition sound like a pretty great keyboard? Well, it is and it isn't. The glaring problem is that $139.99 price (although we saw it for $109.99 during end-of-2017 holiday promotions). Compare with a similar but larger gaming keyboard, such as Corsair's K70 LUX, which uses MX Blue switches and rings up at $99.99 on Amazon. The K70 offers arguably more backlighting customization, as well as dedicated media keys and a tenkey pad. Of course, the Corsair doesn't have Chroma app sensing and profiles, a padded magnetic wrist rest, or the BlackWidow's better portability. So, does the latter list justify Razer's price premium?
All things considered, the Razer BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma V2 delivers excellent quality in a small package. While its key clicks are a tad too loud, they still feel great to type and play on. While there are no particularly interesting physical features about the keyboard, the Chroma software is something to behold and a joy to experience.

As for overall value..it depends. At $139.99, we'd call the Tournament Edition overpriced relative to the competition. It cuts too many features for its smaller size, and, beyond individual games, most users are going to pick their favorite lighting profile, set it, and forget it. (To be fair, we leave ours set in Spectrum Cycling mode, which slowly progresses through the entire 16.8-million-color spectrum. This is literally the only changing color mode we've ever tolerated for standard daily use.) If you can find the keyboard for $99.99 or $109.99, however, the story changes, and Razer's key selling points for this model shine brighter, perhaps irresistibly so. If your gaming roster features several titles on the Chroma apps list, and if you're OK with the volume of Razer's green switches, this would be a hard keyboard to pass by.

Bottom Line: Razer's tenkeyless gaming keyboard is comfortable to type on and has great software. However, its feature set is lacking to compensate for its steep price tag.
